Jerry hitting on Carter????

First the crack about the jeans and then the scene where Jerry tells him to
call him and longingly watching him through the glass door.

Too bad about the kidneys going bad....that is sad.

I thought it was the "magic" mushroom potent that that patient had
with him. I think Jerry may have taken one too many sips of it.

Yeah, that is sad. How does he expect to work a few shifts and do
dialysis with the failing kidneys? I didn't think you could do
anything in that shape.

Maybe...but it was good to see him

Or maybe Puck can market the stuff as "Plausible Deniability". :-)

I expect he's probably able to carry on with most normal activities,
as long as he carries on with getting his blood filtered [however many
times per week], barring a sudden change in his condition, of course
(which would, naturally, occur in the middle of a hectic shift,
bringing the staff-- oh, you know the rest). Presumably Banfield does
know about it.

Do you guys think he came back to Chicago for a kidney transplant or
just to go to his center for dialysis? I'm sure London (or wherever
he is living) has kidney transplant centers so I don't get why he came
back to Chicago.

Maybe...and why didn't his wife come?

Hm... if he's been in Africa all (or most of) this time, he might feel
more comfortable going back to his hometown.

Was there ever a mention of him actually marrying Kem? (Srsly, I don't
know. I took a powder from viewing at one point.) Also, I'd have to
rewatch, to see if he directly addressed the question of whether
they're even still together (I recall that he said she's fine and
visiting her mother in Paris, but kinda blanked any other mention of
her).

No. In fact a big part of the surgery drama was Anspaugh and Benton saving
his kidney so that he wasn't left with just one.

I haven't read any spoilers, but I suspect that Carter contracted a disease
in Africa (such as leptospirosis or some other parasite or water/food borne
disease) that attacks his kidneys, quickly getting his 'weaker' left one and
then his right.

For someone needing dialysis, Carter sure looked good. Not puffy, not
retaining fluid. Hope TPTB don't screw up continuity and say that he lost a
kidney when he was stabbed.

It could also be that, although the kidney was saved during the surgery, it
was badly damaged and eventually failed. There are plenty of viruses and
other illnesses in real life that can destroy the kidneys.

I once knew a guy who was hit by a car and lost his kidney. It was only at
the time of the accident that he discovered his other kidney was
congenitally malformed and non-functional. One kidney can do the job of two
pretty easily. The guy ended up getting a transplant from his mom and did
well. A friend's son was born with one non-functional kidney, too. It was
diagnosed on ultrasound before he was born and confirmed by testing after
birth. He's fine, but his doctors advise against playing contact sports.
My friend thinks that's just fine, watching her two older boys play tackle
football was plenty for her.

Aside from the fact that dialysis is probably not easily obtained in Africa,
it could be that Carter came back to get a donor kidney from a family
member. Although I doubt NBC wants to pay Mary McDonnell, Michael Gross or
the guy who played Chase for a guest spot.

My mother was on dialysis for 4 years before she died. It would be tough to
hold a job because dialysis is time consuming, 4-6 hours 3 times a week and
also is exhausting, but some people do manage to work part time. Of course,
most folks on dialysis are older and have other serious health problems like
diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Since Carter was only asking to pick up
a few shifts here and there and is young and otherwise healthy, he probably
could manage that much. Most dialysis patients who work use peritoneal
dialysis which they can do themselves and doesn't require being tethered to
a machine for hours.

Hey Doc- we waved in your direction as we were travelling up the 271 from
son #1's Wittenberg U. visit this week. We saw 4 colleges in one week and
ended up dragging ourselves to the end with the flu. Today we're comparing
fevers and phlegm hocks from the lungs.

Lesson: get the flu shot and don't shake hands without a bottle of Purell
nearby.

Around here we don't say we're taking the 93 to go up north, take the

People who live near it call it 271. I guess it's a Western NY thing that
Vetgirl has picked up,.

Glad to hear the college visits are coming along, Vetgirl. Drop by anytime.
Made it up to your neck of the woods a couple months ago to visit my aunt.
Quick trip, will have to stay longer next time and drop by for a visit.

He really liked Wittenberg and the coach is fantastic. He's hoping the kid
runs for him. We'll see what the next year brings and what offers come our
way. He's certainly got the grades. He also loved U. Va. and William and
Mary. He's talking Bio Medical engineering, possibly R & D of prosthetics.
At 16, who knows??! If he goes there you're almost halfway between home and
there. I imagine we could have some fun.

Washington and Jefferson is also hot for his grades and running, but I
wasn't very impressed for that amount of $$.

As for the highway speak - it's what we say. There are so many major
highways in western NY, when we talk about driving routes and road names, we
have to say how we're getting there. (ie: the 90, 290, 400, 190, Scajaqueda,
Lakeshore etc)

If you travel out West you will find the same thing between Northern
California and the 'SoCal'.

Some freeways extend the whole state but while up _here_ we refer to
them as "I was northbound on 101...", down south-a-ways they would say
"I was driving on the 101...".

Since most Californians are imports, esp in LA, it might make sense to
concider "they" imported the sensability from your part of the world.

As for Carter; does he _have_ to go out on a Viking's Burning Funeral
Ship?

I doubt he and 'whats-her-face' ever got married although as the
mother of his (deased) child and primary love interest she'll be taken
care of in the future, whatever happens.

I can't wait for the Carbys to come out of the woodwork to analyze his
inquirey to Sam of Abby and Luka. I can see it now.......

"But he really wanted to hear that they had broken up"

"He and Abby are already having an affair, it was in his eyes."

I checked around, they're nearly on that level. Stuff like "Naturally,
Carter asked about Abby ASAP. Did you see the disappointed look on his face
when he heard she and Luka were happy? "(They apparently forget that Abby
was never happy, that she barely knows Sam and that a woman who wouldn't
tell her best friend she's moving a thousand miles away might not be
completely honest when emailing her husband's ex). They also place great
significance on the fact that MT is shown in the promos for the last eppies
while GV isn't. And, of course, he was never happy with Kem; she was
selfish and ungrateful and a rebound from Abby, to boot.

I must congratulate them on their persistent optimism.

That said, I was glad to see NW last Thurs., it did remind me of the days
when the acting on this show was a bit more nuanced. He can say more with a
facial expression than most of the current cast can communicate with 2 pages
of dialogue.

I drive I-95 a few times a year and we call it "the 95". In fact, I just got
back from a trip which included 95 around and into D.C. and points south.
Several people I spoke with - including a B & B owner in Williamsburg, the
concierge at the D. C hotel, the college admissions dean at U. Va. and a
Delaware resident - all referred to it as "the 95". You can't drive in that
area without people talking about how dangerous or busy "the 95" is. So how
it is referred to may be how most do - except for those in your parts. ;-)

When I was born 33 years ago it was with a horseshoe kidney (both
fused together) located in the front rather than the back and I had
IVP's and then later on Nuclear Medicine scans till I was 18 years old
to monitor its function. It also only has one ureter and I was banned
from playing contact sports as a kid. Doesn't exactly help your
social skills when you spend pretty much every gym class sitting on
the sidelines while everyone else plays baseball, flag football,
soccer, basketball, etc. It wasn't until high school when we could
split up into smaller groups and could pick what sports we wanted to
play for each quarter that I found a love for tennis and other non-
contact sports.

Was there ever a mention of him actually marrying Kem? (Srsly, I don't
know. I took a powder from viewing at one point.) Also, I'd have to
rewatch, to see if he directly addressed the question of whether
they're even still together (I recall that he said she's fine and
visiting her mother in Paris, but kinda blanked any other mention of
her).

A marriage was hinted at but never specifically confirmed. In the eppy
where Pratt joined him in Africa, Carter was wearing a wedding band and I
think he might've made reference to Kem as 'my wife' once, too. Small
stuff, but I think they got married at some point offscreen.

I don't think that is quite true. If he gets treatment at his
