Maura Tierney speaks out on health
NBC drama 'Parenthood' stops production
By Nellie Andreeva

Actress Maura Tierney on Monday addressed the health issue that led to
the shutdown of production of her new NBC series "Parenthood."

"I have discovered a tumor in my breast which requires surgery,"
Tierney said in a statement. "I will not know either my exact
diagnosis or course of treatment until that surgery is performed. My
doctors have all assured me this is a very treatable condition. I'm
very optimistic as to the outcome and want to thank everyone who has
sent positive thoughts and support. I look forward to going back to
work soon."

Tierney informed NBC and "Parenthood" producers about the situation
last week when the network put production on the series on hold for
eight weeks to give the actress time to undergo the necessary medical
procedures.

On Friday, the network released a statement, attributing the
production shutdown to "medical evaluation that (Tierney) is
undergoing," declining to release further details and asking for
respect of the actress' privacy.

Tierney on Monday addressed that statement.

"In an effort to guard my privacy, it seems that the wording of NBC's
press release has unfortunately caused some confusion and undue alarm
about my health," she said.

Having read this statement by Ms. Tierney, AS WELL AS the statement
that NBC released that created the firestorm of curiosity, I find
myself wondering why in the world NBC felt it necessary to use Ms.
Tierney's name in the first friggin' place.

Couldn't they have just said (my changes to the statement are in
CAPS), "Start of production on NBC Universal's new series 'Parenthood'
has been postponed for eight weeks due to medical evaluation that ONE
OF OUR valued cast members is undergoing. The top priority for NBC,
Universal Media Studios and Imagine Television is the well-being of
OUR CAST. We are unable to release further details and ask that you
respect THE privacy OF OUR CAST at this time."??

It just seems like simple common sense to not "out" your employees
like this.

Yeah, it's common sense, but we're talking NBC here. The network is
run by lunatics, one of them a junkie.

IMO, they botched the initial press when they specified that the start
of production was going to be postponed for *eight weeks.* Which is
pretty darn specific block of time -- two months strongly suggested to
me (after I considered cancer or something hysterectomy-ish) that she
could have been in rehab and thus ex-post-facto method acting her
worst storylines on ER.

A lot. The immediate reaction would be "this show must be a stinkbomb"
and/or "they're firing the creators" and/or "the network has no faith in
this project" all of which are perceptions that would hurt the show and
advertiser base in the long run.

But the people who matter would see the people involved weren't calling
about a job. Wouldn't that be enough?

Nope. And they probably WOULD be calling about a job, anyway, just to
cover themselves. They've at best had their status changed to
'uncertain but possible midseason replacement' - I doubt NBC is keeping
everybody on salary, waiting to see if the show starts up someday.
They'll at least be calling looking for one-shots, pilots (in season),
etc.
