I thought about which one I wanted to watch (and which one I wanted to
catch online) all the way up to the last minute, but went with CSI...
which was pretty good (directed by William "French Connection"
Friedkin). Well... I say pretty good. I mean not bad. Well... I say
not bad. Anyway! *g* Still, they actually dispensed with the magic
"enlarge a single pixel into the Last Supper" computer this week.

Maybe since it got such great ratings on the finale they'll do some
encore episodes.

Sure a different world from the 1998 'Seinfeld' finale. Or the 2004
'Friends' finale. TV sure has deteriorated that 16 mill for a 15-year-
old show is considered great.

More competition these days, and more time shifting. I know a good number
of people who recorded it in some fashion and won't get to watch it until
this weekend.

16 million is impressive enough for a show down to 7 million, airing
on a network whosepromotions aren't seen by a lot of people. I think
"Lost"s finale may reach 25 million.

I was actually just gonna ask if 16 million viewers is a high number or
not (I have no clue what the population of the US and the parts of
Canada that can watch NBC would be).

It's a high number for ER in this season, but nothing compared to the heyday
of the show when every eppy drew about 30 million viewers. The past couple
seasons, the show's audience has dwindled to 7 million or so, and, in that
context, the finale did very well.

This TV season, only the post Superbowl episode of The Office has had more
viewers among the NBC scripted series. Did any scripted series on NBC last
season get 16.3+ million viewers?

Yes, for NBC this was a big ratings number...and one they will likely never
reach again.

NBC's press-release called it the biggest drama finale since 1996*.
That struck me that it's been that long since a major drama ended. One
that comes to mind is "NYPD Blue" but I don't recall there being much
hoopla.

*That finale? "Murder, She Wrote." Yep, "Murder, She Wrote."

I over heard I think it was Extra, or one of those shows in the back room
mention that it was the highest number of viewers for a Series Finale since
Murder, She Wrote.

Yeah, it is a combination of new technology TiVO and TiVO like
devices that time shifts viewing along with the old standby the VCR;
DVDs, increased basic and premium cable availability, ever increasing
internet uses-including bit torrent downloads to increase the time
shifting effect-and yes the show isn't as good as it once was (but I
think not as bad as some would have it). Here is a real reliable look
at ER viewership, at least among USENET users:

http://groups.google.com/group/alt.tv.er/about

That and other factoids are in my reply to the thread "Has anyone
been here from "the beginning"? The activity simply plumitted, You
can see when things went south April 2004. What was the plotlines
then? Let's see. In "Just a Touch" (first aired April 22, 2004) Pratt
got hit with a sexual harassment suit; Chen was having problems with
her bed ridden father who is loosing touch with reality and Weaver
was fighting for custody of her son. In the next episode "Abby
Normal" (April 29, 2004) Abby tries to help a seizer patient; and
Alex's dad complicates things between Kovac and Sam Taggert and her
son. Correlation? Were it these plot lines that spelled the beginning
of the end?

In a few more days, maybe a week, no one will be here, not even spam
(at least at my end my internet provider seems to be good at keeping
spam at bay). That is one of the sad things about a long running TV
show ending, the gang breaks up.

So Sharon, any other TV shows that you like to talk about on USENET
groups? If not, I'll say "see ya" now in case I don't get a chance
again.

Oh, too bad, its fun-as long as one keeps things in perspective. Some
people do go overboard but it is a healthy diversion overall. What
sucks is when a show you really like with characters you have grown
attached to finally leaves the air. It sucked big time with "Buffy
the Vampire Slayer" and now "Battlestar Galactica". With "ER" not so
much (partly because it had a lot of cast turn over), but I'll miss
it. I was gowning attached to "Terminator: The Sarah Connor
Chronicles" but after only two seasons it doesn't seem long for this
TV world so....
