I've had it.

So Abby's back on the booze again.

Y-A-W-N.

Been there, done that. More than once. Not only is it a lazy-ass
story line, it brings back that bitchy, moody, sarcastic Abby that's
the nightmare of any healthy male and impossible to stomach in a
weekly series.

ER really sucks this season. In fact, it's sucked for years. I keep
watching, hoping--and hoping--that it'll improve and get back to at
least a FRACTION of its former glory. But perhaps it's just too
late. Maybe the series has simply run out of gas. It could be that
ER is now an old nag that's ready for the glue factory.

They shoot horses, don't they?

Oh, and I forgot to add that the closing scene with Skye(?) rutting
like a bitch-in-heat with Whatshisname wasn't even the least bit
titillating. It was just dumb, dull and silly. If I want weird sex,
I can turn on the IFC channel any time of day or night. Give me
interesting medical storylines, damnit!

Uh, sorry...I forgot--ER doesn't do interesting medical storylines
anymore.

Been there, done that. More than once. Not only is it a lazy-ass

It's really not lazy story telling. It's a thing called "life".

I have not watched ER on a consistent basis since Carter left. I agree,
in principle at least, with everybody's complaints about Abby. I'm not
a fan of hers, either... and that's based on both things I've seen about
her when I WAS watching ER, and things I've read about the character
since I stopped watching ER.

Having said everything in the above paragraph, however, I have to
disagree with those who criticize Abby's on-the-wagon again/off-the-
wagon again struggles with her addiction... the addiction to alcohol.

I have personal experience with alcoholism, as do a lot of other people,
I understand. The "yo-yo" up/down/on/off depiction of Abby's alcoholism
is realistic. Since I haven't seen much of it in recent years, I will
not go so far as to say it's "very" realistic, but it IS realistic
nonetheless.

Medicos can tell you statistics better than I can, but I would not be
surprised at all if statistics were to show that less than 50% of all
alcoholics are sober for three years or longer before they relapse
again. It's the nature of the disease to fall off the wagon many, many,
many, many times before sobriety finally sticks and a person is sober on
a long-term basis (longer than five years is what <*I*> would consider
long-term sobriety).

That's because Maura T. just flat-out sucks as a dramatic actress.
She's MUCH better off in a comedic role, and Abby is anything but
comedic. The ONLY time that I found MT remotely interesting was in
SAILING AWAY when Carter went with Abby to retrieve Abby's mother from a
motel room in, IIRC, Oklahoma... and even then, I'm still not sure if
the reason I love this episode as much as I do is because I liked the
actual storyline or because I liked Carter's knight in shining armor
routine, or the reason I liked this eppy could be as simple as the fact
that I simply LOVED, LOVED, LOVED the soundtrack for this eppy.

Abby DID seem to be more enjoyable when Carter was around. I think Luka
just sucked the f*cking life right outta her.

It won't. I think the ship on that hope got ready to sail when George
and Julianna left, and finally DID sail the minute Noah left. Is there
ANYONE on ER these days that was there when the pilot aired???

She was in the one where Susan's sister gave birth, but she was up in
OB. Probably brought back (and to the ER) the next season because she
tested well with viewers. She definitely wasn't in the pilot, though.
Didn't they bring Timmy back for a while at some point? And has Malik
been around lately, or has he gone off to spread mischief and chaos
elsewhere in the universe?

Yes, I remember that about Chuny. Was Lily in the pilot? I don't think so.
Where is Lydia or Connie?

Yep--they brought back Timmy for a few eppies. But he took a liking to
Sam's g-ma and so maybe he's off gallivanting w/ her. heeeeee!

I haven't seen Malik in a while. Has he been on this season?

Heck, is there anyone from Season One still on ER? (not just the pilot
episode)

wouldn't be in misery.
Oh, I'm sure it pretty much would.

Drunk or not, it's pretty much Abby's job to whine, complain, and
wallow in misery and self-pity. What else is new here? Nothing.

Lily was not in the pilot, no, though she did appear in the first
season. Looks like Lydia and Connie jumped ship a few seasons back.

IMDB says he was in "Coming Home".

While it might be 'life', it is not entertainment. I don't watch the show
for a realistic portrayal of the ups and downs of addiction and I find the
writing and acting in this particular storyline to be really lacking. It's
not entertaining to see the same characters in the same situations week
after week year after year. Abby's addiction issues have been played out on
our screens far too long and it is no longer interesting t

o watch her do the same old stuff again and again except now we have her
child in peril, too. Enough already. The main problem is that Abby as a
character has gotten so much attention over the years that she is played out
and used up, especially since the actress portraying her has such limited
range as an actress. MT only seems to be able to hit one or two notes with
drunken Abby and they are extremely harsh and unpleasant ones.

I'd also like to point out that while alcoholics do relapse, many of them
manage to stay sober for years and years. And many times, they catch
themselves when they slip and don't allow things to spiral out of control
which seems to be Abby's MO every time. Amazingly enough, some people
actually go to a meeting when they're tempted instead of diving straight
back into the bottle ala Abby who was already boozing it up a couple of
weeks after Luka left.

And if you were a real doctor, you would know that such alcoholics are
the exception, and not the rule.

The fact is about 95% of alcoholics relapse within the first year.
(This is AA's number as well as the good research. Recovery centers'
numbers are not good research.). Perhaps surprisingly, when someone has
been sober for years before they relapse, they are very likely to have
worse consequences than those who have little or no break in their
drinking. And that's not just the progression of the disease. If you
take two guys with identical history, one goes to AA and stops drinking
for two years and then relapses, in a very short time he will be in
substantially worse circumstances than his twin who never quit. Yes,
there are millions of people succeeding in AA, but for each of them,
there are a score of others who tried and didn't make it.

Abby's story may be realistic and typical, but after the way she
treated Luka when he got home I wish she would just fucking die.
Without her sucking the life out of everything and everybody the show
wouldn't be in misery.
