John Wells turns from docs to cops
'ER' honcho sets up 'LAPD' drama series at NBC
By Nellie Andreeva

With veteran NBC medical drama "ER" heading into its 15th and final
season, John Wells has set up a new drama series project at the
network.

NBC has handed out a pilot order to "LAPD," an ensemble cop show from
John Wells Prods. and Warner Bros. TV.

Penned by Emmy-winning writer Ann Biderman, "LAPD" chronicles the
lives of a group of police officers in Los Angeles.

"ER" helmer/executive producer and frequent Wells collaborator
Christopher Chulack is on board to direct the pilot. He also will exec
produce with Wells and Biderman.

The project, which has begun casting, is being eyed as a potential
successor of "ER" in NBC's Thursday 10 p.m. time slot.

Biderman, who won an Emmy for his work on another ensemble cop drama,
ABC's "NYPD Blue," most recently co-wrote the upcoming Michael Mann
feature "Public Enemy."

The project was packaged by CAA.

Count me as someone that would rather see NBC put a brand new cop show in
this timeslot than Lipstick Jungle or any of the Law&Order versions.

I'd like something from column D.

Why? When I think 'cop show', I think NYPD Blue or Hill Street Blues. That
kind of show is entertaining to me, unlike the procedural tripe of the CSIs
or L&Os.

It isn't like there is a glut of police shows on TV these days. Dexter
might have been the closest thing on TV last year, which should point out
just how much a good old 'cop show' is needed on network TV.

I'd like to see more serial dramas that attempt ambitious longform
storytelling. I'd prefer if it's outside the worn-out genres of
cops/doctors/lawyers but if it has ambition of an "NYPD Blue" early
years, "Hill Street Blues," "The Shield" or "Dexter" that'd be fine.
But with a generic title like "LAPD" and NBC probably hoping to copy
CBS I'm guessing it won't be that type of show.

What if it was called 'Swingtown' and the setting was suburbia with people
working as airline pilots and stock market traders? I bet if they made a
show like that, people would whine about it moving too slowly (after only 2
episodes) rather than enjoying the 'longform storytelling'.

I'm not sure why the name 'LAPD' suggests that the show will suck, but I see
your point about it being on NBC since they specialize in sucky new shows
these days.

You're talking about WQ, whose attention span in serial shows wanes
unless every episode has a grisly murder or prison rape.

Didn't watch it other than out of the corner of my eye cuz my wife watched
it, but I'd rather Lipstick Jungle, at least it's a little different than
the norm these days. Trying to copy something different than most shows
try to copy lately.

The problem is that it WOULDN'T be a "brand new cop show". They've
(meaning all networks) already done HILL STREET BLUES... they've already
done HOMICIDE: LIFE ON THE STREETS... they've already done THIRD
WATCH... they've already done COPS... they've already done LA LAW...
they've already done NYPD BLUE.
