Discussion:
Has anyone been here from "the beginning"?

and when was the beginning? I'm assuming there had to be a perod of
time before the show spun a usenet group on its own.

btw, why are you not rec.arts.tv.er? is there one? this is what google
gave me....

I didn't have usenet access back when ER first started.

None of my usenet servers carry rec.arts.tv.er.

Now, lets think about that...
It premiered on September 19, 1994
and has been aired on Thursday nights
at 10:00 for its entire run.
So, where was everybody back in 1994 & what was the state of the
Internet back then.

Wiki talks this way about the 'Net:
Although the basic applications and guidelines that make the Internet
possible had existed for almost two decades, the network did not gain
a public face until the 1990s. On 6 August 1991, CERN, a pan European
organisation for particle research, publicized the new World Wide Web
project. The Web was invented by English scientist Tim Berners-Lee in
1989.

An early popular web browser was ViolaWWW, patterned after HyperCard
and built using the X Window System. It was eventually replaced in
popularity by the Mosaic web browser. In 1993, the National Center for
Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois released
version 1.0 of Mosaic, and by late 1994 there was growing public
interest in the previously academic, technical Internet. By 1996 usage
of the word Internet had become commonplace, and consequently, so had
its use as a synecdoche in reference to the World Wide Web.
In a simplified remembrance; Mosaic begat Netscape which begat Mozilla/
Firefox (we don't mention Internet Explorer; it embarrasses the
family...)

I don't really think too many folks were actually _on_ the Internet
back when the 1st season of ER debuted.

I've been online since 1995, FWIW, and immediately joined a.t.e. IIRC,
Phyl was here at the time I joined, or joined shortly thereafter (I'll
assume Phyl still posts or lurks here). I haven't watched ER on a
regular basis in quite a while, but still lurk here and post every once
in a while. ER, when it debuted, was the defining medical drama of its
time. Now, though, I think that that "torch", if you will, has been
passed on to GREY'S ANATOMY, which is another newsgroup I lurk/post in,
and have since its inception (and I can't remember when that happened).

I've been here since season 6, and, at that time, this group was huge and
well-established. There were weekly episode summaries and reviews and the
threads discussing current eppies would easily gather a couple hundred posts
by the morning after the episode aired. 600 or more posts for an episode
was standard and big eppies like 'Such Sweet Sorrow' and 'Be Still My Heart'
probably got more than a thousand posts back in the day. Discussions
carried on all through the summer. There were a lot less spoilers back
then, so it was fun to speculate.

There was also a website run by a guy who was one of the originals here on
Usenet, Mike was an ER doc from Canada. It seems to be gone now, but it
held all of the episode summaries and commentaries as well as an episode
list and other stuff. As I recall, the site held summaries/reviews for
every single eppy starting at around the third season, but I'm not positive.
I presume that's about the time that this group was formed.

Phyl did some wonderful episode reviews along the way that were part of the
site, I'm sure she could give us the lowdown since she was here from the
start or very close to it. Phyl, you out there?

Ellen is another oldie but goodie, maybe she can help.

Wouldn't it be cool if some of the originals from around here came back for
the finale? Anyone? Bueller?

I've been here since S6, too. I came on the scene right after the

shock. I felt like I had been through a shredder! Ugh! (I did lurk

I've been around since S6 too, though for the most part only lurking,
and only recently came back because of the series finale. I loved
those reviews though and was sad to find out that they're not online
anymore. If anyone is looking to revisit those, you can still get them
through archive.org. The website was www.digiserve.com/er. The medical
commentaries seem to have been pulled after awhile, so it's best to
visit the archive around 2002 since those were still there back then:

I never actually ran any but I tech supported a few and the clients
who logged into them.

Way back when ER 1st came out I was time-shifting with that state of
the art technology; the VHS recorder. (My online connection was
strictly work based back then so I had to be careful what I did and
where I went.)

otoh- One guy (at a company now out of business btw) set up a download
server to get porn overnight, it was all 'automated' and everything.
(This was 1995.) We all made the appropriate "Oooh", "Ahhh" noises.

Exactly. It was still an object of curiosity, This group, alt.tv.er
was created back in 1995:

http://groups.google.com/group/alt.tv.er/about

That first month of January 1995 saw 68 post; the high water mark of
this group was October 2001 with some 8,202 post. The last time this
group broke 1000 post plus in a month was February 2005 with 1,173.

Considering the 68 post from January 1995 was for only the last week
of the month Assuming there would had been about 68 post a week, 4
times 68 equals 272. This past month of March 2009 saw 155 post. That
means we have lower traffic now a month on average than that first
nine days.

The very first thread may have been this from January 22, 1995 (so
those 68 post represented only about the last week of January 1995):

http://tinyurl.com/cvhxqb

I'm still going to miss the show though. I mean not NEARLY as much as
I am missing "Battlestar Galactica"! Not even close! I am still have
a big hole in my soul over that ending and still mildly depressed, it
was a fantastic show it is probably going to take another two weeks
for me to get over it, just like it did with me with "Buffy the
Vampire Slayer" six years ago. :-(

If anything from ER, I am going to miss Neela Rasgotra and Sam
Taggart, the two prettiest girls on ER since Jeanie Boulet and Deb
Chen (I can see Gloria Rueben's loveliness on "Raising the Bar", Ming
Na Wen I haven't seen lately. I heard she was on "Two and a Half Men"
as a guest star recently but I don't watch that show.); and the fact
it will not be there anymore. It's like an old beat up chair. It is
not as good as it used to be, but it fits and you are used to it and
you know it's contours intimately .

I'll save the final episode on tape (as I did with Neela's farewell
episode from two weeks ago) to go along with the pilot. That first
scene of Dr. Greene being woken up in that darkened room really
started something did it?

I have always liked Ming Na. She's gorgeous! I was sad to see her go
after her character Debbie Chen left to bury her father in China. I
guess Deb didn't want anything to do with County anymore since she
didn't come back. In real life I wonder if the producers of "ER"
invited Ming Na back but she turned them down for some reason?

I will tune into "Stargate Universe" just to see her even though I
haven't watch an episode of the Stargate franchise in a long time
(I'm a "Star Trek"/"Battlestar Galactica"/"Star Wars" fan. Stargate
never held that much appeal to me,not even the original movie). I
hear she is a huge "Star Wars" fan (we would get along swimmingly!)
so she's happy working in science fiction. "Stargate Universe" debuts
in October 2009. Maybe it will inspire me to spend mucho dollars to
get the "Stargate SG-1" and "Stargate Atlantis" shows on DVD. :-)

Since she was not involved in season 15 as were other alumnae, I would imagine
there was some permanent issue between her and the producers. I believe
there was an opportunity to participate in re: Dr. Pratt's death. Or perhaps it could
simply have been a scheduling conflict.

I think I recall Ming Na saying in an interview that it was "time to move on" in
re: her experience with ER. So I can see why she might not want to participate
anything further (although we did see one image of her in the "retrospective" special
just prior to the final episode).

And yes, she was very attractive.

Maybe that is a hint, I mean she wasn't an insignificant character.
I'll search the net for news and will post if I find something in a

I thought it was odd, too, especially considering how many other guest stars
and supporting characters were featured on the special. Makes me think she
either turned them down flat or TPTB somehow didn't want her. For that
matter, it wouldn't have killed them to invite Erik Palladino who played
Malucci to appear in the retrospective. He was a main cast member for
several seasons before TPTB cut him loose in favor of The Abby Show.

Ah, I am going to miss the rabid anti-Abby rants LOL! Some I can
understand not coming back like Dr. Malucci was caught by Dr. Weaver
having sex with a paramedic. "Blood, Sugar, Sex, Magic" (S8XE3). No
reason to comeback there (but at least his character should had been
acknowledged). I can understand Dr. Victor Clemente (John Leguizamo)
not coming back. No happy experience for him with him going bonkers.
The last we saw of him was him being injected with haldol and him
being wheeled into an elevator babbling under the influence of post
traumatic stress disorder in "The Gallant Hero and The Tragic Victor"
(S12XE21). We did see a glimpse of video though, a head shot close up
in the retrospective.

I guess the character Jing Mei Chen simply had no reason for her to
come back since her departure was so depressing and her one good
friend Dr. Pratt, was killed so that is even more of a reason not to
comeback. But the actress Ming Na should had gotten an interview and
a couple of clips.

Since somewhere around the beginning of season 6.
I've also been around since season 6 - that seems to be the popular
consensus around here. Back then I was a 14 year old high school
freshman who got hooked on ER and couldn't get enough of it -
spoilers, message boards, even had my own website (the creatively-
named 'Lindsay's ER Page'). Now I'm 24, in medical school, and living
the awkward, bumbling, third year med student, Season 1 John Carter
hospital experience myself. It's amazing to see how much my life has
changed in 10 years, yet ER has always remained the constant and
reliable presence. But I think it's fitting that now as it's ending
and I won't be able to watch it anymore, I'll be living it instead.
Well, except for the fact that I couldn't be less interested in being
an urban ER doc (rural primary care pediatrics, here I come!) - but
otherwise it's exactly the same in my head. ;)

Good luck with your medical career! I am sure pretty soon wherever
you practice there will be a mini baby boom of girls with the name of
"Lindsay" It's way too late to ask this question but I wonder, how
many care givers have been posting to his group (as opposed to
lurking) now and at the group's peek in October 2001. There is you
(med student) and at least one of the Sharons. I wonder who else? Oh
well, I guess we'll never know now.

Before I forget again I've been here since January 2001. Always sad
to see a group dwindle away after a show ends.

To all that are about to leave, see ya! I will probably be one of the
last ones out. I'll remember to turn out the lights!

Say, speaking of people who were (or have been here and still are) here,
does anyone still hear from Scott Hollifield? He was the original
writer of the episode summaries during the infancy of ER.

And you are all medical care givers? If so that is quite a
coincidence. I wonder, are your last names Valerii? If you followed
the just ended new "Battlestar Galactica" you would know what I mean
and getting at LOL!

The Sharon Valeriis were a model line (among seven others) of
humaniod biological machines that were biologically virtually
identical to humans to the point that humans could have children with
them. They all looked alike. Imagine if you had a twin sister, but
instead of your one sister there were thosands that looked *exactly*
like you. Since you are three women with the same name....

The Sharons (also known as Model No.8) are the georgeous Asian girl,
Grace Park. The platnum blonds are known as "Sixes", their Model No.
(played by Tricia Helfer).

So you three Sharons look alike?

I know, bad joke. LOL!

Nope, I am an MD in private practice nearly 23 years. Sharon Too is a
teacher by education, I believe, and works as the manager of her husband,
Vetboy's, veterinary practice. She's also busy raising 3 boys. Short, AKA
Tennessee Sharon, hasn't posted her in a couple of years. She currently
works as a medical transcriptionist, so she can toss the terminology around
with the best of 'em.

If you look through the archives at the early posts, there's no comparison.
Back in the early seasons, there were residents and med students, attending
physicians and nurses galore. Reading through the threads, they were
everywhere. Most were attracted by the fairly realistic portrayal of
medicine and the people who practice it. They started drifting away as the
show becaome more and more over the top, as the main characters became
cartoons living soap opera lives and, as the show concentrated more on the
big bloody mass casualties than on the small moments in the ER.

Thanks for the well-wishes Hunter! I hope I fare a little better than
some of our favorite characters on ER did - I'd ideally like to keep
both arms and not get stabbed to death or addicted to drugs.

I started lurking around at the very end of "Bam's" tenure. (I can't
recall her real name.) IIRC, Bam, Phyl and Mike used to alternate on
summaries. It was really cool. At the time I was working from a home
office and I'd waste nearly all of Friday morning catching up on the
posts. I'm going to guess it was 2000 or 2001, but I am not
completely sure.
From the long-ago days, I remember Shelby, Lindsay, Karen, and Jamie.
I can probably remember more names if I think hard.
At one point the group got spammed by some annoying "bot" creatures
and I think that drove a lot of regulars away. That and the show's
quality declining.
I used to take Thursday nights quite seriously. The past two or three
years, though, I haven't felt the compulsion to watch or tape. If I'm
home with nothing else to do, I'll watch.
I will miss the community. This was a fun place to hang out.

I'm honored to be remembered, Cathy! Crazy to think how much time has
passed and how much things have changed around here (and yet many
things have remained the same). Seems like so long ago that I was a
semi-regular poster in high school, and now I'm all grown up, or I at
least pretend to be. ;)

Thanks for the memories, all - it's been a fun ride!

Well, except for the fact that I couldn't be less interested in being
an urban ER doc (rural primary care pediatrics, here I come!) - but
otherwise it's exactly the same in my head. ;)

Rose Cooper, if I'm not mistaken. I believe she was the one who was
Scott Hollifield's immediate successor, after he informed us he would no
longer be writing episode summaries.

Wasn't there a flamewar (which ISTR having a significant part in, for
some reason) when Rose took over the summary duties (regardless of whom
she succeeded in the role of "summarizer/reviewer")??
