Post by Sharon tooPost by Darrell Mayedagloria ruben left to continue her career in other pastures. she had
been offered a part as a backup singer in tina turners tour IIRC. I
don't consider Jeanie boulet to be unlikeable. she was alright.
Malucci didn't get anywhere near enough screentime. TPTB should have
made him a recurrng character instead.
Malucci's character provided good contrast to the other regulars. For a
while after he left everyone kind of blended together.
I kept hoping they would do something to redeem the character, but in
the end I think Malucci was there to demonize off-shore med schools.
Remember his conversation with Carter?
OTOH, he was also allowed to be competent* in that episode (what with the
JVS and all). And... then They pretty much just said "Fsck it. We don't
have enough plot to go around, so he's just going to have to do without."
"Fsck it"?? You want them to f*cksuck it?? Interesting... ;-P
Post by Ellen K HurshPost by Jason LaneThey are doing the same with Leela, having Frank call her a TWA and
such.
Different situation with Neela: her post-secondary education has been in
the US - undergrad at Yale, and now med school at U Chicago. The point
with "TWA" (as much as the writers *ever* have a point) was to highlight
what a racist shitslice
"Shitslice"... hmm... interesting word... ;-) Or maybe it's just
interesting because it's 3:30 in the freakin' morning. ;-P
Post by Ellen K HurshFrank is.
* I also thought it was an interesting contrast between Gabe's explanation
of the strychnine thing, and Dave's explanation of what the unripe (?)
akee fruit does to the body. That is, Alan Alda sounded awkward, like he
was reading something that he'd memorized**, and Erik Palladino sounded
more natural.
** Yes, that's what acting involves... but it's not supposed to *sound*
like it's just something that was memorized. (Alda still has a speaking
voice that's my second favorite next to GV's, though.)
FWIW, I think that Alda sounded that way pretty much through his entire
time on ER. It was almost as if he tried too hard NOT to be a certain
doctor on that other medically oriented show that was a hit back in the
70's and 80's. AAMOF, he sort of sounded like he sounds on Scientific
American Frontiers, so maybe he sounded the way he did because he'd
been doing SAF for so long. JMHO, of course...
