Discussion:
So why did Gloria Reuben leave "ER"?

I was changing the channel on the TV tonight and ran across Gloria
Reuben in a show called "1-800-MISSING". This got me to thinking about
her time on "ER". I loved the role she played on the show.

As I recall she left the show to take up a music career, but it seems
like she has done a number of actors roles (short and long term) since
she left the show. So did she leave the show to take up a singing
career and decide to return to acting or did she leave for some
other reason?

Gloria Reuben's dream from when she was a child was to be a singer. So, while
appearing on ER, she was singing somewhere, where Tina Turner spotted her and
asked her to join her in a limited road show. That is when she left ER. After
that was over, she joined the cast of the now canceled show, The Agency. After
the first season, she was let go from the cast. The show only had two seasons.
She then went onto 1-800 Missing. Her website can be found at,
http://www.gloriareuben.com/about/index.html

"...why should we hear about body bags, and deaths, and how many, what day it's
gonna happen, and how many this or what do you suppose? Or, I mean, it's, it's
not relevant. So, why should I waste my beautiful mind on something like that?"

I miss her on ER, not only because the Jeannie Boulet character was one of the
show's best ever, but also because she's about the prettiest person on TV right
now!

"1-800-MISSING" is an intriguing, well written show, of "major network"
quality. (Although the "Jess" character could stand some acting lessons.)

1-800 follows "Wild Card," another fun romp. Saturdays on Lifetime are
actually pretty decent viewing!

Ugh. Boulet was by far the most dislikable character outside Mallucci
and Romano to ever be written into the show. It's a testament to
Rueben's acting skills that I have such a negative feeling for it. Plus
she's a babe.

Absolutely nothing...Weaver canned him to cover for herself. All
things considered I would have rathered see Weaver go...can't stand
her anyway. IMO EP is much more talented than LI in the acting
department...others disagree but hey to each their own. :)

gloria ruben left to continue her career in other pastures. she had
been offered a part as a backup singer in tina turners tour IIRC. I
don't consider Jeanie boulet to be unlikeable. she was alright.
Malucci didn't get anywhere near enough screentime. TPTB should have
made him a recurrng character instead.

Malucci's character provided good contrast to the other regulars. For a
while after he left everyone kind of blended together.

I kept hoping they would do something to redeem the character, but in
the end I think Malucci was there to demonize off-shore med schools.
Remember his conversation with Carter? They are doing the same with
Leela, having Frank call her a TWA and such.

Erik was on Joan of Arcadia last week as a cop, plus I've seen him in
other roles. He'll do fine.

EP's JoA role was a recurring role for a little while. IIRC, his
character has been written out now (I think the character got fired for
falsifying an arrest report or search warrant or something). If I'm
not mistaken, what you saw last week was a repeat of an earlier JoA
episode.

OTOH, he was also allowed to be competent* in that episode (what with the
JVS and all). And... then They pretty much just said "Fsck it. We don't
have enough plot to go around, so he's just going to have to do without."

Different situation with Neela: her post-secondary education has been in
the US - undergrad at Yale, and now med school at U Chicago. The point
with "TWA" (as much as the writers *ever* have a point) was to highlight
what a racist shitslice Frank is.

* I also thought it was an interesting contrast between Gabe's explanation
of the strychnine thing, and Dave's explanation of what the unripe (?)
akee fruit does to the body. That is, Alan Alda sounded awkward, like he
was reading something that he'd memorized**, and Erik Palladino sounded
more natural.

** Yes, that's what acting involves... but it's not supposed to *sound*
like it's just something that was memorized. (Alda still has a speaking
voice that's my second favorite next to GV's, though.)

FWIW, I think that Alda sounded that way pretty much through his entire
time on ER. It was almost as if he tried too hard NOT to be a certain
doctor on that other medically oriented show that was a hit back in the
70's and 80's. AAMOF, he sort of sounded like he sounds on Scientific
American Frontiers, so maybe he sounded the way he did because he'd
been doing SAF for so long. JMHO, of course...

I like it. I am hereby adopting it into my vocabulary. Correct me if I'm

worked all night, can ya tell?)

Dunno... I stole-- er, borrowed it from Heathen's recap of "Now What?"
(Nearly went with "nadslice"... as in - referring to Weaver attacking a
ladder with her crutch - "A large part of me likes to think that Laura
Innes is using this to take out her anger on the writers, who have given
away her screen time to lots of useless nadslices.") Ah, here we are:
""Dr. Lewis, you got yourself another TWA," Frank crabs. Neela looks
momentarily confused, because she doesn't speak Shitslice."

The one who played Shannen Doherty's boyfriend.

The flick was the usual film noir premise about a private dick who
gets hired to follow some rich wife. Or something like that.
