ER - 15x02 - "Another Thursday at County" (9 Oct. 2008)

There was no new episode last week due to the debate, so tonight was
the introduction of Angela Bassett as the new Chief of Emergency
Medicine, one Dr. Cate Banfield.
.
.
.
.
Unfortunately, she was just another in a long line of ball-busting new
doctors with a somewhat mysterious background.  Notice her reaction
upon first seeing the trauma brought in?  And that scene at the end of
the episode with the photograph of her family?  Mystery!  Like Victor
Clemente (John Leguizamo) and Kevin Moretti (Stanley Tucci) before
her, or even Angela Hicks (CCH Pounder) from early in the series,
there will be the initial conflict before a) everyone bonds, or b)
something really crazy happens.  And the ways in which she was shown
to be a hard-ass (telling Sam she can't leave early, for example) were
almost laughable.  Archie's outburst was sadly cliche given the build-
up during the rest of the episode; attacking Frank was almost
surprising.  Was this a color-by-numbers script or what?
The main storyline, the ricin "outbreak," would have played better if
it had not been done time and time again on any number of shows,
including ER, and if something had actually come of it.  At least the
way it was exposed, by some nut with a dead wife, was somewhat novel.
Everyone should have listened to him when he said nobody should touch
his shirt.  The other storylines were dull.  Why was Dubenko fired,
again?  The mention of foreclosures was timely, at least, and the
mother being a locksmith was a new one.  Also: Crenshaw grew a beard
and is calling Dubenko on the sly for help.
As for the new interns, only Shiri Appleby's character stood out at
all, and only because she sort of seemed to know what she was doing
and sort of stood up to Gates about saving the ricin guy.  The other
two who were trapped with Gates (their obligatory first day trial by
fire) seemed to fall into line rather quickly.  Pretty Intern (Emily
Rose, from Jericho and Brothers & Sisters) really needed to keep those
heels on and fall on her ass.  Phone Intern (I think his name was
Ryan) was little more than a background player, a good man with a
family.  At least we got to see the girls in towels for a moment or
two.  Phone Intern is psychosomatic, Pretty Nurse had her shoes thrown
out, and Appleby's character (she needs a nickname) is dating the
fifth intern (who was hardly in the episode at all).
Still, I watched the episode, and I will watch next week's episode,
and I will watch the remainder of the season/series.  Force of habit,
I guess.

and Appleby's character (she needs a nickname) is dating the
fifth intern (who was hardly in the episode at all).
Since she sorta looks like the cartoon version...why not call her by
her character's name... Daria. Wonder if they did that on purpose?
And, according to Appleby's TV bio, she was also in the pilot episode
of ER.

She was a few months shy of her 16th birthday in September '94.

"Ms Murphy" was the girl who swore to Carter that she'd never ever had
intercourse, so she couldn't possibly be pregnant, and then
reluctantly admitted to a skeptical Benton that she *had* (with a
resulting diagnosis of an ectopic pregnancy). Actually had the
inclination to go check the DVD this time, y'see.

Oh yeah.. I remember that scene now... Carter was all dumbfounded when
she admitted it after Benton asking her once.

I'm surprised that TPTB didn't try to work in Appleby's new med
student character as the same teenager character, so once Carter comes
around for his final visit, she could be like "Hey! Remember me? I
lied to you about having sex."

Guess she'd be to old to be a med student now though.

Actually, her character was only 13, so that could work (assuming, of
course, that "Murphy" was an alias and that Appleby is still playing
younger than her real age). I'll be surprised (and very, very
impressed) if they Go There, though... it'll probably be another Frank
(whose abusive doppelganger was *also* in the pilot, becoming the
victim of Carter's very first IV), instead.

I think it would be the same Frank since the Frank in the pilot was a

However, as I recall, the character in the pilot was a cop who was shot by
his wife during an argument, which doesn't really sound like Frank since
he's still married and there's no hint of that sort of discord.

Doesn't work because, when he had the heart attack, we discovered that Frank

In the make believe world of television I think these people existed
before March 17, 1993 which was the in show date of the pilot "24
hours", so it doesn't matter how old she is. She was simply born
before the series premiered.

I have did some research and it is generally accepted that Officer
Martian and Frank Martian are the same person. And having a Down
Syndrome child wouldn't mean that there couldn't be marital discord,
even violence. They could, the husband and wife could resent each
other, but love their child dearly, the two aren't mutually
exclusive, so I believe the majority opinion that Frank Martin is
Officer Martin, even if his wife shot him in the leg (if that is what
happend. He claimed that he shot himself in the leg accidentally.).

Correction: The in show date of the pilot "24 hours" was March 17,
1994, St. Patrick's Day, not 1993. The show itself debuted in
September 1994.

Maybe they will. Right now she has no real reason to mention her past
since virtually all the doctors and nurses that was there back then
are gone. I think only Haleh and Chuny are left and I don't think
she ran into either of them.

Oh by no means she would be. In real life more and more people are
starting second careers late in life. It wouldn't be at all
outlandish to see a say 35 year old intern. I am not aware of any age
limit to medical school anyway.

Netflix lets users add DVDs to their queue before they're released (and some
cases even announced) on DVD.

I think you can watch some shows on imdb now, but not netflix. The
show just aired and someone's already waiting for a dvd release to see
it when there are a number of other ways to see the show before the
week is already up? What a sad world this is.
