Well, we got to see some old friends. They've been missed. Yet
most got sorry finales. It was a reminder of the glory days. What
happened? Talk about bittersweet! One, the cameos were too brief.
Two, it's sad that we can't really turn the clock back. At what
point does the dream start?
My biggest problem was trying to fit the story in
chronologically. Things seemed rather murky. Dr. Greene died during
Season 8. This episode has him already diagnosed with cancer. I
heard mention of chemotherapy.
Things aren't going so well with Elizabeth. Too bad we didn't get
to see her. I thought he was diagnosed after they got married. We
could use a handy "fact checker" here.
Dr. Weaver's cameo was "blink and you'll miss it" brief.
Romano is cranky and has two arms. Would some in-jokes have been fun?
Have him talk of his love of helicopters. She has a hot date-with a
guy. Mark could tell how well-behaved Rachel was. I thought Jerry
didn't come back until Season 8. Too bad he's apparently stayed in
Alaska.
We got our first hint of this story from Haleh. She's the
other link to the flashback. How many patients does this hospital see
in a year? You know only a fraction get shown. What are the odds of
her remembering Cate? Her hair was longer back then. Of course,
some cases would probably be harder to forget. I was
reminded of a poem from college. Unfortunately, the name and author
escape me. It was about a couple's different response to losing a
child. The mother's still heartbroken. The father's a little more
matter-of-fact. He even dug the child's grave.
I'm surprised that this marriage hasn't already ended. Russell
has about finally reached the breaking point. At the end, things
appear to have turned. It will be interesting to see any changes in
Cate. If we see none, we're in sitcom land.
Her professional experience definitely clouded her judgment.
Yet Daryl couldn't be saved. Perhaps some time at County earlier
would have changed her attitude. Not all hospitals have lots of
equipment.
I get the feeling that they never set foot here in all those
years. Maybe they went farther if they needed medical treatment. She
said that she rarely left her apartment for two years. How did that
affect her training? At some point she got more. The tsunami was a
wake-up call. Note that they had no more children.
Cate's treated other children since her tragedy. But this
case did something to her. It helped that she had a good team.
Tracy actually did some doctoring. Who was the Spanish-speaking nurse?
Where was Chuny? It was probably best that Haleh remained in the
flashbacks.
Which doctor would you most likely open to? Morris might
not be my first choice. I hope he was off duty. Still, beer in the
lounge is scary. Hopefully no patients could get in there. It was
still a nice moment.
The flashback took up most of the time. But other characters
also got some moments. Sam and Tony's new arrangements aren't going so
well. PLEASE don't have them come home and find fake Alex and Sarah
kissing! I'll leave it at that. We heard no arguments about the
toilet seat or toothpaste tube.
There was the moment of going the extra mile for a patient.
Max didn't seem that interested. Will he return?
Tony shouldn't use all his favors with Cate too soon.
It's time for another Uncle Jesse moment! He hated that Danny
Tanner loved to hug. Remember what Cate did to that would-be robber.
Anyone hugging her might get much worse.
So DuBenko and Cate talked about Neela. They can use first
names. Yes, she does micromanage. But Andrew needed some help. As
I recall, some procedures forbid eating anything red. Lime seems to be
the most common Jello flavor in hospitals. Dairy products can also
cause problems.
Poor Andrew gave too much information. Yet he left out an
important detail. Maybe interns should get help from literary
professors. Cate showed some sympathy there. Still, none of us wants
to be the patient that good doctor kills. Ditto for our loved ones.
This was a better episode than the last one. Maybe the old
friends improved some writing skills. Give Frank his space back! We
also got to see Eric's tribute to Michael Crichton. Hopefully Dr.
Benton will return soon. We could have a list of which characters to
keep away. Cleo is one. Let's hear your choices too.

Sincerely,
Darren Thornton

Well, we got to see some old friends.  They've been missed.
More or less.
My biggest problem was trying to fit the story in
chronologically.   Things seemed rather murky.   Dr. Greene died during
Season 8.   This episode has him already diagnosed with cancer.   I
heard mention of chemotherapy.
I don't remember exactly when it was that he decided to stop
treatment, how long that was before he zapped off to Hawaii and the
great beyond.
Things aren't going so well with Elizabeth.  Too bad we didn't get
to see her.   I thought he was diagnosed after they got married.   We
could use a handy "fact checker" here.
IIRC, he was diagnosed in the same episode that she found out she was
pregnant, which was before they got married (recall that she had a way-
maternity wedding dress). I guess Corday was too busy being an
archaeologist in the 51st century to make an appearance in this
episode. *g*
Dr. Weaver's cameo was "blink and you'll miss it"  brief.
And then she crutched off to pick up her check.
I'm surprised that this marriage hasn't already ended.   Russell
has about finally reached the breaking point.
And then we can has Cate/Morris snoggage? (Yes, I'm a sick, sick
woman, in case that hasn't already been made abundantly clear.)
Which doctor would you most likely open to?   Morris might
not be my first choice.   I hope he was off duty.   Still,  beer in the
lounge is scary.   Hopefully no patients could get in there.   It was
still a nice moment.
Morris's beer hearkens back to the Heinekens Doyle kept in the fridge
for off-duty use... season 3?
The flashback took up most of the time.   But other characters
also got some moments.   Sam and Tony's new arrangements aren't going so
well.  PLEASE don't have them come home and find fake Alex and Sarah
kissing!  I'll leave it at that.   We heard no arguments about the
toilet seat or toothpaste tube.
Maybe they haven't been cohabiting long enough for *those* arguments
to start. OTOH, Uncle Jesse's been living with females - he's probably
already been trained to put the seat down.
There was the moment of going the extra mile for a patient.
Max didn't seem that interested.   Will he return?
And sorry, but does anybody care?
So DuBenko and Cate talked about Neela.   They can use first
names.   Yes, she does micromanage.   But Andrew needed some help.
Anybody else get something of a Carter/Lucy feel to that scene with
Andrew trying to present the woman's case and Neela interrupting?
(Like the one where Carter cut Lucy off before she'd finished, jumped
to the wrong conclusion, and got pissy with her when he wound up with
egg on his face.) Not that Andrew's H&P was free of pooch-screwing, of
course.

Yep, Mark was diagnosed at the same time Elizabeth got pregnant. He then
underwent the fancy magical supposedly curative surgery in NYC while she was
still pregnant during November sweeps, IIFC. They then got married late in
the season just before she delivered. Elizabeth wore a gorgeous maternity
dress.

This episode had to have been set in the months just before Mark died as
that is when he got the chemo. He originally had the surgery along with
some immunotherapy followed by radiation. It wasn't until the tumor
recurred after Ella overdosed with Rachel's E and Elizabeth left him, that
Mark got chemo at County. Recall that Elizabeth returned to him while he
was on the chemo, shortly before he decided to call it quits and bought the
farm during May sweeps.

And it is very sad that I remember all this dumb stuff without looking it up
but I cannot recall what I had for breakfast yesterday.

OH NO YOU DI-ENT!!! ;-) You totally know they'd go there if they had
enough time left. Speaking of which, shouldn't there be a "E.R. Episode
Countdown" on the intarnets somewhere? How many episodes are left?

Now that you mention it, yeah. Of course, statistically, when a show is
on for several decades, it's bound to accidentally repeat itself once or
twice ;-).

You don't have a problem with these interns working 2 or 3 shifts with
just cat naps here and there, then being woken up to treat a critical
injury, half-asleep, but drinking one beer is "scary"?

I usually give the writers much more credit than that. Anyone who
knows me from alt.tv.smallville knows that LOL! It is no different
here. I think they knew what they were doing. Here is the timeline of
key events:

Season 7:

Greene and Corday become engaged in "Sand and Water" aired October
19, 2000.

Corday learns she is pregnant in "Rescue Me" aired November 23, 2000.

Mark has his biopsy and learns he has a brain tumor in "The Dance We
Do" aired December 7, 2000.

Mark meets with the surgeon in New York who thinks he can operate in
"The Greatest of Gifts" aired December 14, 2000.

Mark has his operation to remove his tumor in "Piece of Mind" aired
January 4, 2001.

Mark marries Corday in "April Showers" aired. April 19, 2001.

Season 8:

Jerry comes back in "A Simple Twist of Fate" aired February 7, 2002.
Also Mark and Corday's marriage is in trouble Mark is afraid that his
brain tumor has comeback.

Mark's fears are realized when he learns his tumor is back and keeps
the news from Corday in "It's All in Your Head" aired February 28,
2002.

Corday learns of Mark's condition in "Bygones" aired March 28, 2002.

Mark Greene realizes he cannot care for his patients effectively. He
decides to forgo chemotherapy in "Orion in the Sky" aired April 5,
2002. It was his last day ever at County.

Mark Greene dies, "On the Beach" aired May 9, 2002.

Season 9

Romano loses his arm in "Chaos Theory" aired September 26, 2002
(season premier).

At the the time of the flashback Elizabeth and Mark were separated
for about a couple of weeks and Elizabeth was staying at a hotel with
toddler Ella over her swallowing Rachel's Ecstasy tablets. While
Green was still working on Darryl, Banfield's son, Greene ask Haleh
about Elizabeth:

Greene: Is Elizabeth working tonight?

Haleh [compassionate]: I can check.

Greene [swallows a pill]: Forget it...[he then instructs her to call
the lab for some test results]

Now at the end of the episode in the last flashback where Dr. Greene
comforts Dr. Banfield over the lost of her child it is night out side
and near the Chicago River. It sounds like from Corday's crying over
the phone that she just learned that the cancer was back after Mark
had kept the news from her for about a month and was having chemo for
that long. Mark is speaking on his cellphone as he walks down the
stairs to almost river level to join the grieving Dr. Banfield. He
says to Elizabeth:

"Hey, listen I would really like to see you. I-I miss you Elizabeth.
Please please..don't-don't don't cry. Ye-...tonight...yeah, I-I-I'll
come over."

He hangs up hangs up.

So from all of this I belive the flashbacks take place on the same
exact day that "Bygones" does. Early in that episode Corday still
didn't know about the returned tumor and therefore didn't come to the
hospital and Mark in the flashback didn't even know if she was
working that night but by the end of it she did know and was crying
over the phone. And the staff learned before her about Greene's
condition just before Elizabeth did so the very sympathetic tones
from Haleh, Weaver, and in his own way Romano.

It all fits Jerry being there, Corday's behavior indicating she had
just learned the terrible news. As far as I can see there is nothing
to contradict this scenario, so I think the writers got it right.
