From TV Guide:

Stars from 15 years of ER scrubbed in as the veteran medical show approaches
its series finale on April 2. Among them: Noah Wyle, whose saintly doc
Carter arrives from Darfur with both his marriage and his only remaining
kidney failing. "This story line is going to bring Eriq La Salle back and,
tangentially, Julianna Margulies," says exec producer David Zabel. (We hear
George Clooney also plays a part in Carter's story, as does guest Susan
Sarandon.) "I get to play a lot with Eriq," reveals Wyle. "Dr. Benton just
happens to be on staff at the hospital where I'm having dialysis." Maura
Tierney also makes a cameo visit. Says Zabel, "There will be a lot of great
stories and great moments."

Also, Susan will be back:

Sherry Stringfield is returning to ER, a source close to the deal has
confirmed to TVGuide.com.

Stringfield's participation is the latest in a slew of alums who have signed
off to send off the show in its final season, a group that already includes
Anthony Edwards, Julianna Margulies and George Clooney.

Stringfield played Dr. Susan Lewis on NBC's medical drama from 1994-1996 and
then returned to the show in 2001 for another four seasons. No word on how
Dr. Lewis will reappear this time.

I asked a couple of weeks ago if Carter lost a kidney in the knife attack,
and the response was "NO".

So why does this article refer to "his only remaining kidney"?

Because I think they decided to change the facts and assume that we
don't remember what happened. At the time, he didn't lose the kidney
but they are saying now that he lost the kidney.

Maybe...at least that is what they are telling us

So why does this article refer to "his only remaining kidney"?
Regardless of the print media, Carter explained on the 15.17 episode that
*some time after the stabbing* he lost function of the left kidney and then
the right failed due to amyloidosis secondary to schistosomiasis (a
parasitic disease) he contracted in Africa. Way back in season six when he
was stabbed, Benton and Anspaugh worked diligently in surgery to save the
kidney and apparently, at the time, they did. But TPTB are working into the
unseen storyline that eventually the kidney ceased functioning.

And that is why I'm suprised at this whole "lost a kidney in the
stabbing" storyline. I know my memory is kind of fuzzy on episodes
six or eight seasons ago, but I remember that Benton was determined to
save his kidney. Plus, when he first came back, he was in a lot of
pain from the stabbing and they told him that kidney needed to heal.

Maybe...so it didn't happen during the stabbing or right after

---
It didn't the reviewer misreported what happened in his or her desire
to be brief. Carter lost "function" in the kidney he was stabbed in
IIRC but he still has it I think, but effectively he has lost it
since it doesn't work several years after the stabbing. Now the one
he had left over doesn't work. That is the one that was infected with
that exotic disease, so now he needs a transplant.

The only way to be sure is to rewatch the episodes. DON'T rely on
your memory especially if you are inclined to bag on the writers. I
also have thought the writers have made some mistakes and continuity
errors in the past only to do some research, including rewatching
episodes only to find out they are right and my memory was wrong.
Remember, they have the scripts and show bibles and the actual actors
to refer to as well as the episodes on tape. We here are going on
nine year old memories.

Anyone who have the pertinent episodes of Carter's stabbing and his
recovery on DVD or VHS check in please :-).
