As Kem, does this woman have a fan base?
I find her very wooden, but maybe others can enlighten me with why they might
like her...she doesnt seem all that popular.

I like her very much. I find the character a very refreshing occasional
addition. I hope to see more of her in the future. She is much more
interesting to me than some of the other female characters. I like Carter and
Kem together just as much as I like Luka and Sam together. And this is just
opinion, not trying to tell anyone that they're wrong to disagree with my
choices of favorite characters.

Have you ever seen her in "Flirting?" (1991) Nicole Kidman is billed as
the star, but Thandie is the one playing the main character. Anyway, I
highly recommend it.

Good point, Doc. Not everyone finds Abby delightful and interesting either.
The same can be said for most of the characters. Then again, some people just
don't like Kem because she's not Abby. To each his own. I very much like the
character of Kem and don't find her annoying at all and find her very
interesting.

Can I ask what you find interesting about her?

I have to be honest, while I initially liked the character, I haven't been
as impressed or as interested as time has worn on. My concern is that Kem
can only interact in storylines that are solely about Carter (because Kem
isn't a doctor and stories concerning her character will need to be set
predominately away from the ER, or else unrealistically give Kem access to
the ER.). That means Carter's storylines will be predominantly away from the
ER, has they have been this year. I'm talking about storylines, not Carter
appearing to have random moments with other characters in the ER. The only
"Carter acting as a doctor in the ER" storyline this year has been the
storyline with Neela killing the patient. The rest of Carter's storylines
have been in Africa or concerning Kem and the baby, or Carter and the
foundation. The Kem character seems to be keeping Carter from being in other
ER related storylines (and I am aware this is partly due to Wyle's
scheduling) but looking to the future, I don't find Carter and Kem hanging
out fascinating enough to prefer it to a straight medical storyline

But that's the sole point of her character. Tptb intentionally aren't spending
that much time for the audience to get to know her. The storyline is more about
exploring Carter's issues.
Since this storyline began I think it's been pretty obvious that Kem will not
be around long so why should tptb invest much time in the audience caring for
her.

I happen to enjoy Thandie Newton. At least I have in all the movies I've seen
her in. Well, except Beloved but that was more about the movie itself. If
anyone has seen the movie you'll know what I'm talking about:)
I'm not a particular big fan of Kem but I don't dislike her. Yeah, I prefer
Carter with Abby and I'm just waiting for the time when Kem leaves so we can
see how tptb explore Carby now that both Abby and Carter have experienced some
growth and maturity.

I like Kem, or more pointedly, how happy Carter is with her. I know from
spoilers where this is going and I don't like it, but I don't blame the

But really - taken in context, Sassy is just saying she/he finds the actress
annoying and uninteresting. The only person putting hate in the picture here
is you, Sharon.

Personally I don't think its a great role for Thandie. I don't think she is
being given enough to do to shineand what we are left with is a role that
almost any reasonable attractive female could fill, for all that we see Kem.
Its a bit like the problem with Lisa Vidal - it just didn't matter whether
she was great or not because she was never asked to do much other than show
up. Thandie is in a similar box with the role of Kem.

That's also the way I took Yasmin's post. She's well known for being a
Carter/Noah basher, so I'm always skeptical of ambiguous comments that she
makes.

I didn't mean so much her height as her weight. In the first few epees she
appeared in, there is a time or two when we see her from a side view and she
looks only about 3" or 4" thick.

Oh, I know that. My mom - she has the same kind of general "bird bones"
build to her - didn't top 100 pounds until a while after she and my dad
got married. (These days, of course, 100 pounds is a distant memory for
her. But anyway.)

I don't care for her in ER but I liked her in MI2 and she is going to
be in the Chronicles of Riddick, which I am looking forward to. I
once saw her in a movie with Jon Bon Jovi, I can't remember the name
of it. I didn't see it for her but she was very good in it. To be
fair I did like her while she was in the Congo, but once she came to
Chicago her character changed to annoying...

Interestingly I agree with Kelley. I have seen thandie in other things and
enjoyed her performances but after her first episode on ER, she has
interested me less and less as her character has become less interesting.

I do find Thandie's name interesting because you pronounce it Tandie. For a
while I'd been say Thandie and I sounded like I was saying Sandy with a lisp.

Well, speaking only for myself, I don't like Kem. I have mixed feelings about
Abby. I never liked her with Carter (meaning that I don't dislike Kem because I
feel that Carter should be with Abby instead), but there are things I DO like
about her character. (And I certainly dont' consider her to be the devil
incarnate, as do so many here.)

I think Abby has never looked more attractive than in the last half
dozen or so episodes...don't know what it is, but her face is
younger-looking and someone has finally done something with her hair.
