Used to be, at the end of each season, we'd hold a poll and ask everyone to
comment on the best and worst on the show that season. We stopped a couple
years back because there just wasn't the interest. I figured I'd give it
one more shot before we turn out the lights and hit the road for the last
time. If anyone has contact with anyone who ever was a regular here, please
ask them to come back and answer the poll, once more for old time's sake. I
hope we can get a few responses to this one, this show was full of wonderful
moments.

Now that the finale is two weeks in the past, let's look back on all 15
seasons as a whole and remember the good stuff, the funny stuff, even the
stuff we hated. Please answer each question and elaborate a little on your
answers a bit rather than post a list. Tell us why a certain episode or
character touched you. You don't have to write a book, a few words or a
phrase is plenty. I won't post my answers right away, so you'll just have
to wonder who my least favorite character was for just a little longer.

Here we go:

1. Favorite season

2. Least favorite season

3. Favorite main character

4. Least favorite main character

5. Funniest main character

6. Favorite supporting character

BTW, this group can live on as long as posters want it to.
Dark Shadows ended many years ago and the Dark Shadows
usenet newsgroup is still very active today and they
have a Dark Shadows festival every year. And the DVDs stil
sell very well.

So go out and buy the ER dvds, have your own ER marathon.

I'm actually in the process of "marathoning" all the seasons I have on DVD (all 10
published so far... Season 11 is due out in July). I can't speak much for the latter
seasons, but I'll speak for those I know of.....
Post by sharon
1. Favorite season
Season one - honorable mention to season 8 (Greene's/Benton's last)....
To be expected I guess. It's pretty much always the first "defining" season in a show
that does it for me.
Post by sharon
2. Least favorite season
13 - I didn't even DVR much of it. The only one I even recall watching was the
ep. where Weaver departed.
Post by sharon
3. Favorite main character
Carter, of course. He was supposed to represent Michael Chriton and Chriton's
experiences in the ER. It was all about him. A strong Honorable mention to Benton.
2nd Honorable mention to Mark Greene.
Post by sharon
4. Least favorite main character
Weaver - The one I loved to hate. Which should indicate the excellent job done by
Laura Innes in portraying her. Another "honorable mention" to Jennifer Simon (nee Greene),
Mark's "ex." 2nd Honorable Mention to Robert Romano.
Post by sharon
5. Funniest main character
Not sure of the context here, but the one that made me laugh the most was Doug Ross
(of the *main* cast). Of the "supporting" cast, the funniest was Jerry (Abraham Benrubi).
Post by sharon
6. Favorite supporting character
Nurse Haleh Adams, by a long shot. The unsung rock of that room.
Post by sharon
7. Favorite guest star
CCH Pounder as Dr. Hicks - The one I respected the most.
Post by sharon
8. Least favorite guest star
Kathleen Whiloite as "Chloe Lewis" - or more correctly, the character Chloe herself.
Honorable mention to Christine Harnos as Jennfer Greene, simlarly as above.
Post by sharon
9. Funniest guest star
Liz Vassey as Liz - the one trying to "infect" all the doctors in season 1. The "subject
matter" wasn't funny, but her attempts at attracting her prey were priceless.
Post by sharon
10. Favorite storyline
Susan Lewis' attempt to adopt/keep Suzie. Heartbreaking.
Post by sharon
11. Least favorite storyline
Mark's Divorce from Jennifer Greene and his subsequent descent.
Post by sharon
12. Funniest storyline
Can't think of one that spanned episodes.
Post by sharon
13. Most interesting medical storyline
The "peds" case where Benton screwed up and nicked the child's liver, causing
all sorts of mayhem.
Post by sharon
14. Least interesting medical storyline
No nomination. All were pretty interesting to me.
Post by sharon
15. Best use of a song in an eppy
Hawaiian "Over the Rainbow" for Greene's pre-death scene.

Honorable mention again to the playing of "Tequila" during Hathaway's
"non wedding" reception in re: Taglieri. 2nd Honorable mention to "Theme
from Shaft" played when Benton arranges the Hayride for Dr. Corday. Loved the Afro..
It reminded me of the only other movie in which I saw a pre-ER Eriq LaSalle...
As the "Slo-Glo" guy in "Coming to America."
Post by sharon
16. Best couple
Ross/Hathaway - I just wish they'd both have "matured up" and realized it
sooner. They could have been making each other happier for longer, and
perhaps even avoided a lot of trouble/grief they eventually endured.
Post by sharon
17. Worst couple
Mark & Jennifer Greene. Damned from the start. Both should have realized before
they married how career oriented they were, and thus the unfortunate result.
By the time they noticed it, it was too late. Both had their heels dug in and weren't
budging. The only thing good to come out of that relationship was Rachel (the
young/cute one played by Yvonne Zima). I suppose they had to replace her with
Hallee Hirsh (as the older, more "bad assed" Rachel) to cover the change in her story
arc.

And yet another Honorable mention to Benton/Carla Reece, even though it did result in
Reese Benton (even if not biologically :-) ), and thus, Peter's "Raison D'Etre" thereafter.
Post by sharon
18. Favorite episode
Blizzard, Season 1. I know the emphasis was on "Loves Labor Lost" from that season,
but what hooked me for this episode was the plot line of "Dr. Bob" risking everything she
worked so hard for in her native Poland as well as what she was working so hard to
achieve in the US, all for the life of that one man who was dying in front of everyone
and where no one was helping. She probably had done hundreds of Aorta Cross clamps,
but was torn between her not being certified in the US, and the patient before her. A
gutsy move, and it saved the life of that man. I would have loved to see her return
as a fully licensed surgeon in the US in the last season.
Post by sharon
19. Least favorite episode
No nomination.... Hard to say
Post by sharon
20. Best ER memory
Dr. Benton mourning his mother's death vicariously, through that AIDS patient in the
last ep. of season 1.

==========================================

What? No "Hottest Hunk/Babe actor/actress" categories? :-PPPPPP

Other Comments -

It's funny, watching the older seasons on DVD how I noticed specific actors performing
guest shots that subsequently went on to the other three of my most favorite TV series
in this era... West Wing, JAG and NCIS. I had forgotten their performances on ER.
There are way too many to mention, I thought of putting together a matrix list but to what end?
I guess it only proves that it's a small world in "show biz" and everyone has a set group of
collaborators they like.

I'll have some other comments about season 15 as soon as I finish watching the DVRs.
I'm paying strict attention to those older characters that come back for a season 15 farewell
perspective.

IMHO you have to take Weaver and Romano with a giant grain of salt.
First and foremost they were the administrators and thus were
caught between a rock and a hard place. They worked with
doctors/nurses who complained about the tight budgets, they
also worked for a city owned hospital where the city was
complaining cut the budtge or the place shuts down.

You'd probably be a bitch too if you were caught in that
bad situation.

Our local hospital was city owned, the city was always complaining
about the budget and the need to sell it/shut it down. A local
hospital bought it and is now screaming they either need to sell
it or shut it down.

It wasn't their "administrative" natures that earned their "least favorite" status for me.
Weaver was just plain "irritating." And she was so even before she took on the "admin"
functions of the E.R. Perhaps it was Laura Innes' nasal voice that added a lot of
"umph" in that portrayal (done to perfection by her IMHO). But she was simply irritating.

As for Romano, he was just a nasty guy. Self-centered, Egotistic etc. Not that he was
the only one like that there, but he seemed to make an art out of it.

Again, it wasn't a "budget/admin" thing. It was a personality thing. Personalities
that were self-evident before they took on those admin roles.

I wasn't all that into Abby. I would say the closest I came to that "can of worms" was
with Dr. Lewis, and her efforts to adopt little Suzie.

1. Favorite season
The first. As said by a previous poster, if you like a series, the first
season is usually the best, because it's new and you're getting to know the
characters and the writers are brimming with ideas. I still have the pilot
on VHS, and consider it something of a classic.
Post by sharon
2. Least favorite season
Again I'll echo a previous poster. I also really disliked the Lucy Knight
character (which may have been a dislike of the actress who played her, it's
difficult to tell sometimes), so whatever seasons she featured in so
prominently were my least favorite.
Post by sharon
3. Favorite main character
Early on, none. They were all good characterizations, well played. In the
last season, Carter, which really surprised me, because I had never liked
him that much at the beginning. I suppose he, and Wyle, became a link to the
show's more glorious past this season.
Post by sharon
4. Least favorite main character
Lucy Knight.
Post by sharon
5. Funniest main character
No question, Romano. The only one who consistently made me laugh. I doubt
anyone like him could survuve in a real organization, but it was fun to
watch.

6. Favorite supporting character
Jerry. He reminds me of my brother.

7. Favorite guest star

8. Least favorite guest star
Sally Field, every fucking appearance.

9. Funniest guest star

10. Favorite storyline
Lucy getting killed was very satisfying!
Post by sharon
11. Least favorite storyline
Anything to do with Abby's dysfunctional family, including Luka.
Post by sharon
12. Funniest storyline
I rarely thought that ER's attempts at humour panned out very well.
Post by sharon
13. Most interesting medical storyline
Alda's Alzheimer's.
Post by sharon
14. Least interesting medical storyline
That one with the woman from Sex and the City, where she couldn't
communicate and we had to listen to her thoughts the whole hour. Boring!
Post by sharon
15. Best use of a song in an eppy
Never paid much attention to the music. That said, I was pissed at NBC when
they cut the opening theme.
Post by sharon
16. Best couple
Carol and Doug, no contest.
Post by sharon
17. Worst couple
Carter falling for and then marrying the anorexic.

4. Least favorite main character
Lucy Knight.
I think the main reason i disliked Lucy Knight is because the actress
in her previous series played a very smart very intelligent girl so
it seemed to me that they modeled Lucy Knight as the exact opposite of
that character.

I always found that offensive on the part of the writers.

There's no other way when it comes to the Crabs. Interesting how many
people were sick, sick, sick of her by the time she finally got on a plane
and off the show. I feel like a trendsetter, being on the cutting edge of
the Abby dislike. I lost any affection I had for her by the end of the
neverending season where we met Abby's mother and realized that bipolar
disorder was not the worst thing in Maggie's life; her daughter was.

I miss Daryl too. I'm all for going to his place. I'll sing Over the Rainbow
after a few chocolate martinis.

BTW - you'll have to prescribe heavily for me for the flight. I just hate

Sweet & how Dr. Greene cared for her (showed not all doctors are stuck

We've had some great discussions (some were doozies!) but overall,
I've loved this group!!! I will miss it. I have fond memories of {in
no particular order} Lori S. (my almost twin ;-) ), Turner, Karen,

I'll come back & add to the list later. :-)

****May I add another catagory?

21. Character you did a 180 on (either you liked them then ended up
hating them or vice-versa)

For me, it was Pratt & Morris--couldn't stand either one at first but
I ended up liking them. :-)

1. Favorite season
Hmm, hard to say but I liked S1, S3 & S4 the best.
Post by sharon
2. Least favorite season
S11-14.

An honorable mention to Andrea Parker as Linda Farrell and also one
for Pablo!!
Post by sharon
7.  Favorite guest star
Sally Field (her storyline w/ Abby was a lot like my mom & myself),
loved seeing Randy Mantooth & Kevin Tighe on there, Garrett Morris,
Red Buttons, Roscoe Lee Browne.  I could go on & on but I'll stop. ;-)
Post by sharon
8. Least favorite guest star
Glenne Headly, could not see any chemistry at all w/ Carter.
Post by sharon
9. Funniest guest star
Dan Hedaya--Dr. Herb Spivak.  Only one I could think of that was
funny.
Post by sharon
10. Favorite storyline
I don't like Abby but I enjoyed the storyline w/ her mother (so sue
me!); the Africa stuff; the one w/ Jeanie & Scott (Dr. Anspaugh's
son); Mobalage & his wife; Dennis Gant & Benton; the one w/ Loretta
Sweet & how Dr. Greene cared for her (showed not all doctors are stuck
up pricks {no offense, Doc Sharon});  Charlie & Doug Ross; the Bishop
& Luka (portrayed Christianity in a positive light--loved James
Cromwell's portrayal of the bishop).  There's more but I'll stop
here.  :-)
Post by sharon
11. Least favorite storyline
Luka "helping"  Nicole; Kerrye & Kim & Sandy; Mark & Cynthia; the
whole time Dr. Clemente was the chief;  custody battle over Reese;
Benton & Cleo dealing w/ Kinesha.  There's more but I'll stop here,
too. :-)

12. Funniest storyline
Mark trying to "power-date"!
Post by sharon
13.  Most interesting medical storyline
14. Least interesting medical storyline
"Love's Labor Lost"....I know people were enthralled w/ this eppy but
I wasn't. And Carol helping Meg.....boringgggg.
Post by sharon
15. Best use of a song in an eppy
"Battle Flag" by Lo-Fidelity All-Stars & "Takin' You Home" by Don
Henley.
I know, so obvious but these are the ones for me!
And also, "Ain't that a kick in the head" by Dean Martin when Mark
went to NY for Tx of his tumor. (I know, I'm warped) ;-)

16.  Best couple
Doug & Carol----hands down!!!!! ;-)
Post by sharon
17.  Worst couple
Lucien & Skye (if you can even call them a couple); Luka & Nicole;
Carter & Abby Keaton; Luka & Abby (I liked them at the 1st hookup but
not the 2nd); Benton & Cleo (there was soooo much more chemistry
between him & Elizabeth); Sam & Luka; Susan & Div.  I could go on & on
&on but I won't. ;-)

20.  Best ER memory
It has to be coming here and reading & posting these last 9 years!!
We've had some great discussions (some were doozies!) but overall,
I've loved this group!!!  I will miss it.  I have fond memories of {in
no particular order} Lori S. (my almost twin ;-) ), Turner, Karen,
Darrell, Darren, Sharon (broj neki), Sharon (Vet girl) and (Doc)
Sharon, Lorraine G., Lorraine P.,  Phyl, Ellen, ceindreadh, bret2000a,
CoolHandDukeTheBlueDevilMan (i.e. Charlie), Richard3to16, Kelley30,
Hunter Rose (miss his **ratings bonanza**), DawnK, EpneBelle, Rap,
Gabby, & Cathy M.  There's more but I need to get off here.  Maybe
I'll come back & add to the list later. :-)
****May I add another catagory?
21. Character you did a 180 on (either you liked them then ended up

Also another one in the music catagory (I heard it on the radio the
other day): "Stuck in the Middle w/ You" by Stealer's Wheel; when
Susan took Chuck to meet her dad at a bar.

I can hear a song on the radio now & think ER before I think of
anything else. And also replay the scene in my head when it was
used. Must mean I am more of an ER junkie than I thought. ;-)
