Discussion:
Carter in med school

I've been watching the early seasons on DVD and was wondering if it
was ever discussed where Carter went to med school. There was one
episode where he made reference to wrestling at Penn with a patient
who was a wrester, but I think that was probably for undergrad. (And
on that note, would that refer to UPenn or Penn State? Which one is
more commonly referred to as just Penn?)

Since he was an intern at the beginning, I guess he would've had to
have been at a Chicago area medical school, so perhaps University of
Chicago or Northwestern? There was an episode in the 6th season where
he wore an NU sweatshirt, and there may have been other instances as
well.

Penn is the University of Pennsylvania and is an Ivy League school, which is
consistent with Carter's upbringing. Penn State was Abby's school, though
it was never explained how she, a poor kid from Minnesota, afforded the out
of state tuition.

They never identified his med school specifically. For that matter, it's
only in recent seasons that the show acknowledged the existence of
Northwestern in its universe.

He wasn't just an intern. He was actually a med student during the 1st two
seasons. Recall that he did his "surgical Sub-Internship" during his senior
year of Med school at County General. This would lend more credence to
his going to either U of C Med school or NU med. Recall the 1st episode of
Season Three, "Dr. Carter, I Presume." That was when he became an intern.

Furthermore, I'd think that if Carter did go to Penn (U of Pennsylvania), and
made a "reference to wrestling," then it was indeed undergrad, as I doubt
he'd have a whole lot of time for extra-curriculars while in medical school.
It could happen, but I'd doubt it seriously, especially if he attended NU (I'm
an NU undergrad Alum).

Not necessarily. In college I knew people who aced all their exams
while they never even cracked the book open.

So Carter could well have been the star of the wrestling team and
still aced all his classes.

In fact in college I knew people who partied like there was no
tommorrow, drank like a fish, and still aced all their classes.

In my college days we called them "business majors"

Undergraduate School, absolutely..

But Medical/Dental/Law school???? I doubt he (or anyone) would have time
for it. About the only thing there would be time for are classes, studying and
maybe a part time work-study job if needed. I'm not even sure there would
be organized school sponsored sports in graduate/professional schools. The
only thing I'd think available would be the "professional" societies like "Law
Review" or "Business Review" etc.

Unless he did something like AAU or some other Amateur thing not school
affiliated.

Thanks everybody for your responses. I think the Penn reference was
for undergrad too -- it occurred in the first season episode "9 1/2
hours" when he was talking to a patient who was starving himself in
order to make the weight class for a wrestling match, and Carter
referred to his own wrestling in the past tense. Besides, it wouldn't
make too much sense for a med student in Pennsylvania to go to a
Chicago hospital for his third-year rotations.

I'm pretty sure Northwestern has been mentioned in previous seasons,
though usually in passing (i.e. when they get a call about some huge
accident and would list the number of patients being dispatched to
each hospital in the area). People have definitely interviewed there
for jobs too...in season 8, when Chen got the chief resident position
over Carter, he interviewed for a job over there, which was the same
job that Susan Lewis (when she came back) had on her list of places to
interview.

And I don't even want to think about what Brutus and the boys could do to
both The Wilcats and The Badgers. Neither do you, I'm sure.

There's a reason why we're THE Ohio State University. Ask Santonio Holmes,
he'll explain.

Maybe if you ask real nice, he'll show you his shiny Super Bowl MVP trophy.
He was the only good thing about the Stillers winning another one, IMO

Brutus??? Pffftt...

Can the person IN the costume even SEE *anything*???!! I mean,
"wildcats" and badgers actually have REAL eyes, you see (pun [or
whatever that was] COMPLETELY intended, BTW...).

I dunno, the dude in the badger head and ugly striped sweater on the
sidelines during Wisconsin games doesn't look like he can see too well,
either. Then again, considering his team, maybe that's for the best. As
for the Mildcats, well, we don't even need to go there.

I've been watching the early seasons on DVD and was wondering if it

I just had a look at the "John Carter, MD" episode from season 2.

Definitely Northwestern. You can see it in the Commencement ceremony
scene.

Oh, great catch! I just went and checked the episode too. Makes me
that much prouder to be an NU alum! :)
