"Does Bush proposal threaten access to the pill?

White House seeks to protect health-care workers who object to abortion"

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/25940818/

FTR and FWIW, it has NEVER made sense to me why in the world people who
are morally opposed to abortion would choose to work in an area of
health care that includes women's reproductive rights, and that includes
pharmacists.

They know what they are getting into when they sign on for the job. To
think that they can just choose not to uphold their obligations to their
patients who seek birth control/RU-486 (mifapristone???) because they
are opposed to the practice of contraception, and thus, try and overrule
the law, not to mention the majority of people in this country who DO
think abortion or birth control should be a legal practice available to
all women, is morally reprehensible.

If you don't like the fact that your profession can legally dispense
contraceptives and the abortion pill, then you need to get the hell out
of the way and let someone take over your JOB who does agree with Roe v.
Wade and other related laws on the books that relate to reproductive
rights.

I'm pretty conservative but I pretty much agree. I won't go so far as
"profession" though. There's lots of OB/GYNs that don't do abortions. If
a Catholic OB/GYN wants to refuse to prescribe the pill and he can build
a practice regardless, then whatever. But if you don't agree with your
employer's stance on any issue, and you find that it puts you in an
uncomfortable position, then you should find a new employer.

EXACTLY.

IMVHO, it's one thing if you have a private practice... just you (or if
you own/operate your own pharmacy, just you and your family). Then I
say you can do or say whatever the hell you want WRT birth
control/abortion. However, when you're working FOR the freaking local
Walgreens, or, say, Mayo Clinic, you MUST be able to abide by their
rules and regulations governing contraceptive prescriptions or
abortions. If you can't abide by the corporate policy WRT
abortions/contraceptives, THEN DON'T GET A FREAKING JOB THERE.

It just doesn't seem like frickin' rocket science to me to be able to
figure that out.

It never has made sense to me either. It would be akin to a
Christian Scientist becoming a pharmacist and then telling
the customers don't with this medication that doctor prescribed,
go home and pray harder.

Also when these health care professionals are opposed to abortion
and birth control are they going to fork over enough money
to cover the $200,000+ it takes to raise a child in 2008? And are
these health care professional going to volunteer to help care

Probably not, but they WILL tell Mom AND Dad that if they didn't want
kids, they should've kept their legs shut, which is just SO not the
answer.

Biden's elder son, Beau, was a partner in the Wilmington law firm of Bifferato, Gentilotti, Biden & Balick, LLC and was elected Attorney General of Delaware in 2006. He is a captain in the Delaware Army National Guard, where he serves in the Judge Advocate General's (JAG) Corps. I absolutely believe that, in this post-9/11 world, the Secret Service
isn't going to let the VPOTUS commute, period.

Also, since Maybe mentioned the VP residence, here's the Wikipedia
link...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Number_One_Observatory_Circle

"Number One Observatory Circle is the official residence of the Vice
President of the United States.

Located on the grounds of the United States Naval Observatory in
Washington, D.C., the house was built in 1893 for its superintendent.
The Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) liked the house so much that in 1923
he took over the house for himself. It remained the residence of the CNO
until 1974, when Congress authorized its transformation to an official
residence for the Vice President. The congressional authorization
covered the cost of refurbishment and furnishing the house.

Before that time, the Vice President lived in his own home, but the cost
of providing security for these private residences had become
prohibitive.

Although Number One Observatory Circle was made available to the Vice
President in 1974, three years passed before a Vice President lived
full-time in the home. Vice President Gerald Ford became President
before he could use the home, and his Vice President, Nelson
Rockefeller, primarily used the home for entertaining since he already
had a residence in Washington. Vice President Walter Mondale was the
first Vice President to move into the home and every Vice President
since has lived in the house.

The Vice Presidential mansion was refurbished by the United States Navy
in early 2001, only slightly delaying the move of new Vice President
Dick Cheney and his family..."

OK, so I can't remember for sure, but isn't Biden one of the ranking
members on Foreign Relations or something like that? If a member of the
Senate is a ranking member on one of the more notable committees, I am
under the assumption that they are offered SS protection during times of
crisis (e.g.: 9/11).

My point is that I think Biden's already a bit used to living in a SS
bubble of protection... maybe not to the extreme that the POTUS or
VPOTUS live in a SS bubble, but still... oh... BTW, Paige, you're
talking about a governor of a state, a person in a position that
virtually nobody else in the world would have a problem with except
whichever state you live in. What I and others are talking about is the
Vice President of the United States.

Thus, to allow the VPOTUS to commute to work would be a little bit more
problematic. S/he could have Islamic or Muslim or Canadian or abortion
extremists lunging at them on the sidewalks of Washington D.C. at any
given moment, or a sniper on the roof of a building could take a shot at
'em at any given time that they aren't in the limo (and if you're going
to walk to and from work, you DO spend a LOT more time exposed to
potential danger vs. being in a secured limosine <sp?>), and to deny
such a scenario could happen would be ignorant at best.

I believe he got secret service protection back prior to January.
I believe all the candidates got it after Obama had a threat on
his life and Clinton had the hostage incident at her campaign

That secret service protection probably ended when Biden ended his

I would point out every week there is someone trying to gain
access to the white house grounds. Many of them are "death
by cop" type incidents. i.e. someone wants to commit suicide
they get the cops to shoot them.

Now Biden could continue to live in his Delaware house, they just
get him there by limo or Air Force 2 rather than train.
